There is a meta behind these ads Guy. The Dems are showing Roskam's history of radical right wing religious poltiics. That may have played in the 6th, home to Franklin Graham and Wheaton College but they're betting it no longer does.

House Repubs are playing up the racist strains they discovered in the Minuteman movement even though their solution to illegal immigration is immoral (ethnic cleansing) totally impractical and would destroy what little int'l reputation we have left.

I'm glad to see Duckworth has a new ad out stressing the most important issue of this election: Iraq. We're just losing more good Americans and prologing Iraq's agony at this point to preserve the legacy of George W. Bush. That's not worth one more American life or limb. John MUrtha was right a year ago and still is now, our presence there just makes the insurgency and the civil war worse. It's time to get out and finally find and kill Osama bin Laden and destroy Al Qaeda.

I think this has hit on what the biggest problem is here -- the national parties going all out to win at any cost and unleashing slews of despicable ads. Don't get me wrong on this blog post, I know the RNC is doing the same thing that's why i say both of them have dragged this down into the mud.

In my own district I get a daily mailer from the DNC on behalf of Bean or the RNC on behalf of McSweeny telling me how evil the other is or how they lied, etc, etc. It's truly disgusting and turning someone, who has always loved politics, off from it all.

I don't doubt for a minute that Roskam sided with the NRA on both bills like he has with all others having to do with firearms and voted against them. Even Henry Hyde supported the assault weapon ban but not Roskam. He gets a ton of money and canvassers from the NRA and rubber stamps whatever they say. The FOP endorsed Duckworth because she knows what an AK-47 can do to people and Roskam's insistance that gun purchase records be destroyed after 90 days. Talk about your pre 9/11 thinking.

Now if you want a stupid ad run by the DCCC take the Dr. Suess one. Roskam admitted to Eric Zorn he wanted that book banned because some other stories in it "appeared to glorify violence and the occult" as Roskam put it. So the ad was technically true but nobody believes he wanted Dr. Suess and Laura Ingalls Wilder banned. The DCCC didn't have to go over the top like the NRCC does to make their point and it hurt Duckworth's credibility.

Having said that I wonder what Roskam thinks of Harry Potter books. I know a lot of Christian fundamentalists think they glorify the occult. I tried calling his office and asking last week but they put me on hold and after 10 minutes I hung up.

Right you are, that's one confusing lead.

The bill flashed on the screen for about all of one second, if I saw the bill number that would help things.

That's not the point though, the point is the ad makes it look like Roskam thinks it's okay for kids to bring guns to school. The specific charge is that he's not interested in protecting kids and this vote illustrates that. That's complete hogwash.

I don't know this guy from adam, haven't followed this campaign but I saw that ridiculous ad knowing full well how it is skirting the truth by saying principals can't expel kids from school when it's the school boards that do that.

You have that wrong. The Illinois FOP endorsed Duckworth. You really can't believe anything you see in a Roskam mailer.

I'd be curious to know when the School Code was changed. Be my guess there were two competing bills at the time in the Illinois Legislature. One saying the Principal could expell a kid with a gun and one saying the School Board. It'd also be my guess Roskam voted against them both at the behest of the NRA. Can you dig up the relevant legislation and show it to the class?
